ABBA is back and hoping you’ll take a chance on them again.
After a 40-year hiatus, the Swedish pop foursome has reunited for all the dancing queens out there and will release a new album alongside a virtual concert.
Group members Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 75, Agnetha Faltskog, 71, Bjorn Ulvaeus, 76, and Benny Andersson, 74, will drop a 10-song studio album and a concert, both titled “ABBA Voyage.”
The news was announced during the group’s livestream event on Thursday — also aptly called “ABBA Voyage.”
The band first cryptically hyped Aug. 26 that the group would possibly reunited and release new music. Their official Twitter account brought fans to their website, AbbaVoyage.com, and promised a “historic livestream.”
Thursday’s announcement featured a montage of the “Take a Chance on Me” singers in their younger years as they sang several of their hit songs throughout the decades. Another montage showed superfans — even Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue — happily dancing to ABBA’s iconic tunes.
The event then surprised fans with the world premiere of the band’s new music video and song, “I Still Have Faith In You.”
“When Benny played the melody, I just knew it had to be about us,” said Bjorn.
The virtual concert is said to use motion capture technology to make the band look younger and in all their 1970s glory.
Benny and Bjorn revealed during the livestream that the crew started with just recording two songs — and then they decided to just keep going and make a whole new record. They ended up writing 10 tunes for the album, premiering two during the livestream.
“It’s about realizing that it’s inconceivable to be where we are,” Bjorn said during the event. “No imagination could dream up that, to release an album after 40 years and still be the best of friends, and still be enjoying each other’s company, and have a total loyalty.”
While the album is set to drop this Nov. 5, the virtual concert will open next year in a custom-made arena in London. The show will play for six nights per week and feature digital versions of the pop band
The creative minds behind “Mamma Mia” disbanded nearly four decades ago and claimed they would never, ever get back together. In the last 50 years, the group has amassed over 400 million album sales.
After winning the Eurovision music competition in 1974 with their hit “Waterloo,” they released several albums in the 1970s and 1980s.
The iconic foursome split in 1982, and yet their music has transcended time and time again. Their songs have been the basis for the musicals “Mamma Mia” and its 2018 film sequel. Classics such as “Dancing Queen,” “The Winner Takes It All” and Money, Money, Money” are still as catchy as ever.
