According to research, an artificial sweetener commonly used in fizzy drinks causes female dieters to gain weight. Sucralose, a sweetener found in Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, and other soft drinks, increases food cravings and appetite in women and overweight people.
It did not have the same effect on men of a healthy weight. “Drinking artificially sweetened drinks may trick the brain into feeling hungry, which may lead to more calories being consumed,” said Professor Kathleen Page, a researcher. ”
The calorie-free sweetener, also known as Splenda, is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Many people use it for weight loss, but it has been linked to type 2 diabetes, according to Prof Page of the University of California, Los Angeles. Other studies show that it also harms gut bacteria.
