Following weeks of leaks and rumours, Remedy Entertainment today confirmed what many gamers already suspected: a 4K ultra high-definition remaster of classic horror game Alan Wake is coming to consoles this autumn.
Formerly a Microsoft Xbox exclusive, Alan Wake Remastered will be arriving on Playstation for the first time. Inspired by classic Stephen King novels, the game follows troubled novelist Alan Wake as he attempts to uncover the mystery behind his wife’s disappearance in the beautiful, and terrifying, town of Bright Falls.
First released in 2010, the original Alan Wake was popular for its realistic world design, atmospheric visuals, and story, and was followed by a sequel, Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, in 2012.
Confirming the release, writer Sam Lake told a fan website: “Alan Wake Remastered is the original experience you fell in love with all those years ago. We did not want to change that.
“But the visuals all around, including the character model of Alan Wake himself and the cinematics, have been updated and improved with some choice next-generation upgrades.”
It represents the first big game launch for developer Remedy Entertainment since supernatural FBI-ish action-adventure game Control, which is set in the same narrative universe as Alan Wake.
That game revolves around a secret US government agency called the Federal Bureau of Control, and character Jesse’s journey into the agency’s bizarre paranormal headquarters.
More details could be revealed later this week as Sony hosts its first Playstation Showcase in two years. Alan Wake: Remastered is heavily rumoured to be included in their monthly Playstation Plus lineup of free games. Other announcements tipped to take place include gameplay reveals of Horizon: Forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok, and more.
