‘Below Deck Med’ star Captain Sandy celebrates 33 years sober

“Below Deck Mediterranean” star Captain Sandy Yawn is celebrating 33 years of sobriety.

“It’s been 33 years clean for me. From jails, institutions, car crashes, motorcycle accidents, hospitals, bankruptcy, heart attack & cancer,” Yawn, 56, captioned a photo of herself on Instagram Monday from July 19, 2011.

“I felt like a hopeless human being, always in trouble, people turning away from me because I was so destructive,” she continued. “The day finally came when I had my last drink and drug on August 29th 1989. My life today is beyond my wildest dreams.”

Yawn also urged her followers to seek help if they are struggling and want to make a change.

Fellow Bravolebrities Leah McSweeney, Tracy Tutor and Mercedes Javid were among those who shared their well-wishes.

“Real Housewives of New York City” star McSweeney, 39, is also sober after she decided to stop drinking when the coronavirus pandemic began.

“Once COVID hit, I knew quarantining and the way I drink would not work well together …to say the least,” McSweeney told Page Six in June 2020. “Not drinking during the pandemic has been a complete gift to me, and the nine years of living booze-free has made the transition much easier to deal with.”

Yawn previously let fans into her journey with sobriety, writing on Instagram in August 2020, “32 years clean today. Staying clean one day at a time has been an incredible journey. 32 years ago today they told me if I don’t pick up a drug or drink that I would live a life beyond my wildest dreams. That has happened and continues to happen even when times are hard., no matter what, I don’t pick up!”

Yawn’s openness to discuss her sobriety even helped former “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Braunwyn Windham-Burke, who revealed in an October 2020 interview that she had reached out to Yawn when she wanted to get sober.

“I knew Captain Sandy was sober for, like, 30 years, so I called Leah [her girlfriend] and asked if I could speak with Captain Sandy,” Windham-Burke, 43, said at the time. “We talked for an hour, during which time I told her what I was dealing with and asked if I could do this [sobriety journey] on film. She said, ‘Absolutely, but you need to own it on the show. You need to be accountable, otherwise you’re going to drink again.’

“Before I could change my mind, I called my producer and said, ‘This is the truth: I’m an alcoholic. I have been for many years, and I need to get sober. Let’s tell this story.’ Five days later, we started filming.”
