Boris Johnson has a new favourite joke so prepare to cringe.
Posting on Twitter, the Prime Minister has shared a series of videos of himself eating and drinking things that kind of rhyme with “better” to play with his new favourite slogan “build back better” – which was incidentally also used by Joe Biden in his successful 2020 presidential campaign.
So far Johnson has sipped from a pint of beer and proclaimed “build back bitter”, shoved a wooden fork into a pile of fish and chips and quipped “build back batter”, and spread a slice of toast (wholemeal) while smiling and saying “build back butter”.
Surely he has exhausted all the words that sound a bit like better but we do fear that somewhere in a basement in CCHQ, there is a room of social media officers working with a dictionary in one hand and a thesaurus in the other using their English Literature degrees for pure evil.
Will “build back sweater” see Johnson grappling with a jumper? We honestly perish the thought.
Reacting to his absolute dad jokes, people thought he was being pretty embarrassing:
And Labour MP Rupa Huq completely slammed him:
Of course, Boris Johnson is no stranger to using slogans in politics and opposition leader Keir Starmer has repeatedly called him out for doing so.
You might remember his refrain “Get Brexit Done” during the 2019 general election campaign, for instance. Two years later, Brexit is kind of “done” in the sense that Britain has left the EU but the consequences of the divorce are very much being felt. Tried to get any petrol lately?
It is likely that these social media stunts are yet another way for Johnson to present himself as a loveable rogue – the kind of quirky man who goes on a jog wearing a shirt and formal shoes – but whether they will make people forget the issues he is presiding over is a question for the next general election to decide.
