We’re all for reimagining classic stories and giving old favourites a modern twist.
That’s why people are so hyped about Amazon’s retelling of ‘Cinderella’, which will be released on the platform on September 3.
The adaptation of the fairytale stars popstar Camila Cabello in the title role, alongside other big names including Pierce Brosnan, Minnie Driver, and James Corden – who is also one of the blockbuster’s producers.
The trailer, which was released earlier this month, looks promising enough: strong graphics, tight choreography, and hints at a more feminist denouement.
Yet, an excerpt from the movie, which was leaked on Reddit, has left people grimacing with discomfort. The fact that it was shared on the Subreddit “Cringetopia” gives you some idea of what’s in store…
The clip begins amidst the iconic fairy godmother scene, when Cinders meets her magical guardian who transforms her into the belle of the ball.
In this case, the godmother – or rather “fabulous godmuva” – played by Tony Award-winner Billy Porter decks out our protagonist in a glittering strapless gown.
“Eeeeeek, this is gorgeous!” Cabello shrieks, prompting Porter to respond: “Yasss, future queen. Yasss!”
Next up, Cinderella is rustled up a pair of glass slippers but, not totally sold, she asks her benefactor: “Any way you can make them more comfortable?”
“No,” Porter replies, adding: “Women’s shoes are as they are. Even magic has its limits.”
The video racked up more than 45,500 upvotes and 4,400 comments, with Redditors voting overwhelmingly that it had earned the title of “cringe”.
“The screenwriters were trying way too f***ing hard to be ‘current’,” one commentator wrote. “Everything about this screams, ‘are we appealing to the youths yet?’”
“Man this film is great but it just doesn’t have enough Twitter slang and painfully exaggerated stereotypes of gay people,” added another sarcastically.
“’Yass future queen’ made me want to shrink into my skin and implode like a dying star,” said a third.
A fourth remarked: “This comes off as an SNL (Saturday Night Live) skit.”
And a fifth agreed, writing: “Wait this is real? I thought this was some sort of joke/parody.”
Some users were slightly more forgiving, with one conceding: “The comment on women’s shoes being so uncomfortable that even magic can’t help was a pretty decent joke but that was it.”
While another, addressing their fellow Redditors suggested: “It’s a musical. So they are actually just playing very heavily towards their intended demographic. This film isn’t for us. It’s for theatre kids and people who aren’t turned off in the first place just by virtue of it being a sing-along cringe fest.”
Meanwhile others were reminded of another catastrophic Corden project.
“Have you forgotten the ‘Cats’ movie?” one asked.
While another wrote: “Don’t worry. James Corden is in this movie. He’ll save it right?”
And a third just said ominously: “I can already see the Rotten Tomatoes score.”
Of course, this sequence is but a 40-second insight to the movie as a whole, so we should all hold our horses (and mice footmen), before passing judgement.
In a promotional message for the film Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, insisted the upcoming reboot would be a “classic we all know and love, but this time with a modern unique twist.”
She added: “Producer James Corden and the filmmaking team have taken this beloved fairytale and revamped it with a fresh, empowering perspective that will resonate with audiences and families around the world.
“We couldn’t be more excited for our global customers to sing and dance along to director Kay Cannon’s reimagination of this classic story.”
We’ll have to wait till next Friday to see what the world truly thinks…
