Comedian Bob Mortimer grew up having 16 sugars in his tea and coffee (but now he’s down to 6)

But he said if he lost count and put 17 sugars in a cuppa, it would be too sweet.

Bob, 62, revealed he has cut down to just five or six sugars in hot drinks.

The start of him overloading on sweet treats came, he believes, after the death of his biscuit salesman father when Middlesbrough-born Bob was about seven.

He recalled: “When I was young, I used to put in 16 sugars. I promise, I did.

“The slightly amusing thing about that story is that if I put 17 in it was too sweet for me. My dad died in a car crash and I think I started taking all these sugars then, because it is mood altering. That might be the link.

“Maybe on my deathbed, they will pour me a tea and I will say, ‘No sugar’.”

The dad of two had triple-bypass surgery in 2015 and was forced to cancel his tour with long-time comic partner Vic Reeves after doctors told him “95 per cent” of his arteries were blocked.
