WHEN he proposed to childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn in late 2017, Ed Sheeran wanted the moment to be Perfect.
But the singer has now revealed it was anything but, as Cherry was so shocked she asked if he was joking.
Ed, who wed Cherry soon after in early 2018, said: “I was getting down on one knee and I said, ‘Will you marry me?’
“And she was like, ‘Are you f***ing joking?’ There was this long silence and I just went, ‘Please?’
“It is the most human I have ever felt because in my career. Sometimes you find it is like, ‘Can I do this?’ and people are like, ‘Yeah’.
“You kind of get to a point where it becomes normal and then you are in a situation where you are literally on your knees being like, ‘Will you marry me?’
“It is such a huge life decision someone has to make in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, she did say yes.”
Speaking on Swedish talk show Skavlan in an episode airing tonight, Ed said Cherry’s reaction to his proposal was not the only thing that was less than ideal. The winter weather put a further spanner in the works.
‘I kept saying we should go for a walk’
Ed added of the proposal in Suffolk: “On the day it was p***ing down with rain and I’d built a f***ing pergola at the end of the garden to do it. Sunset, pergola, some wine . . . and it was p***ing down with rain.
“I kept saying we should go for a walk and she was like, ‘No!’ I was like, ‘Are you sure you don’t want to go for a walk?’
“Time was ticking. There was a date engraved on the ring and I was like, ‘I’ve got to do it today!’ “It gets to 9pm and I was like, ‘For f***’s sake!’”
They do say the course of true love never does run smooth. At least you got there in the end, Ed.
BEY’S AN EYE-FALL
JAY-Z fell Crazy In Love with wife Beyonce all over again after seeing her in this dress.
The gown showed off Bey’s hourglass figure on the red carpet for his new film The Harder They Fall’s gala night at the London Film Festival.
Jay was a producer on the Netflix film about black cowboys in the US.
Idris Elba, joined by his wife Sabrina at the capital’s Royal Festival Hall, plays real-life outlaw Rufus Buck.
Regina King plays robber “Stagecoach” Mary Fields.
Beyonce shared pics of the night on Instagram. One showed her cuddled up to Jay in the back of their chauffeur-driven car while another had her pulling silly faces. And she still looked gorgeous.
JESY’S PRETTY AS A PICTURE
IT has been a whirlwind period for Jesy Nelson, but ten months after dramatically quitting Little Mix, today she is finally launching as a solo artist.
The singer was pictured outside Kiss FM’s studios in London yesterday in a polaroid-print two piece, doing promo for her debut single Boyz, which was released this morning.
Jesy has collaborated with Nicki Minaj on the track, which samples P Diddy’s Bad Boy For Life.
The song has been delayed for weeks, but she has got it out in the nick of time to avoid competing with Adele, whose first single in six years will be out next Friday.
Jesy has had a string of No1 singles in her ten years with Little Mix, but not even her popularity could compete with megastar Adele.
JUDGE ROB RINDER has proved himself to be Steps’ unlikely No1 fan, looking starstruck and begging them for a photo on the red carpet.
The Sun columnist told me: “CARAVAGGIO, MAHLER and Steps – I don’t really know what happened.
“I party like it’s 1899, but when I go dancing, I dance to Steps. Steps are impossible not to smile at. They’re the perfect expression of what’s good and joyous about pop music.
“Before it was cool or part of the conversation, they have always modelled acceptance and joy in an amazing way I’m trying to sneak a selfie with them.”
Looks like it worked out nicely.
X-CITED FOR MADGE
INJURY forced Madonna to cancel a string of dates on her last tour but tonight fans will finally be able to see her epic Madame X theatre show.
The concert was filmed in January 2020 and will now be broadcast on MTV at 10pm.
Eyebrow-raising moments in it include her dancer boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams pretending to be shot on stage, Madge posing in a Napoleon-style outfit and her performing from inside what looks like a concrete hamster wheel.
After decades at the top, she can still keep us entertained.
TOM’S OLYMPIC BLAST AT ANTI-GAY NATIONS
DIVING champ Tom Daley had a powerful message to deliver as he picked up the Sport award at the ceremony – revealing he is on a mission to ban homophobic countries from the next Olympics.
Tom, who won gold with Matty Lee in the men’s synchronized ten-metre platform event at this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo, said while accepting his Sport award: “There are still ten countries which punish being gay with death, that were still allowed to compete at the Olympic Games. And that’s shocking to a lot of people.
“It’s really important to try and create change.
“So I’m going to make it my mission – hopefully before the Paris Olympics in 2024 – to make it so that the countries that criminalise and make it punishable by death for LGBT people are not allowed to compete at the Olympic Games.
“The World Cup is coming up next year in Qatar, which has extreme rules against LGBT people, and women, and it should not be allowed to host a sporting event . . . a country which criminalises against basic human rights.
“So that is my mission now to try and change that.”
Alan Carr’s Easy On excitement
EXCITEMENT is at fever pitch for Adele’s big comeback.
But one person not counting down the days until her new album is her best pal Alan Carr, because he’s already heard it.
The comedian was on top form at the Attitude Awards and revealed on the red carpet how he has already listened to the superstar’s next record, which is being kept under lock and key.
Speaking about Adele, who will release her comeback single Easy On Me next Friday after posting a teaser on Tuesday, Alan said: “I have heard the songs before. I have to be careful, but it’s wonderful to have her back. Because even hearing that little snippet was like seeing an old friend.”
Alan also urged his fellow stars to get off Twitter, which he hasn’t posted on for almost four years, after countless celebrities complained about being trolled on there.
He said: “I’m so over f***ing Twitter. Just get off it. It’s dying a death. You’re a dinosaur if you’re on it.
“Come to the shallow Instagram. I hate Twitter, but I love Instagram. It’s so shallow it fits me perfectly. And I get so many likes when I’m in Speedos – that was a joke.”
Thanks for clarifying, Alan.
Hammond is a big deal
LISON HAMMOND has landed herself a six-figure deal to become the new face of In The Style’s latest range.
The This Morning star joins celebrities including Stacey Solomon and Jacqueline Jossa, who have hugely successful collections with the popular fashion brand.
She signed her deal earlier this month and will be unveiled as the fashion website’s latest big-name collaboration later today. A source said: “Alison is one of the most recognisable faces – and voices – on telly, and In The Style snapped her up as quickly as they could.
“She is fronting their Voice Of The People range and the collection will showcase styles loved by Alison. She adores fashion and jumped at the chance to be involved with In The Style.
“She scored a six-figure deal to work with them and has taken great pride in curating her collection.”
