On Sunday, August 8, news surfaced that Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden had died at the age of 91.
In July this year, the coach was diagnosed with an undisclosed terminal medical condition. His son, Terry Bowden, later told the media that it was pancreatic cancer.
Announcing his condition, coach Bobby wrote in his statement at the time: “I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come. My wife Ann and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”
Fans and popular football personalities took to social media to mourn the coach’s passing.

Bobby Bowden’s net worth and career explored
- The football coach boasted a net worth of approximately $14 million.
His massive wealth can be credited to his highly successful coaching career. Bobby worked with the Florida State football team from 1976 until 2009. His salary as the coach of the state is revealed to be $2 million per year.
Bobby was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1929. As a child, he was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and spent most of his youth in bed. He often listened to radio broadcasts and developed his love for football through that.
He went on to play for Alabama’s Crimson Tide as a quarterback. However, the coach had to leave his position as he wanted to marry his high school sweetheart, Ann Estock. Alabama’s policy at the time stated freshmen weren’t allowed to get married.
Although a career in the NFL as a player wasn’t meant to be, Bobby turned to coaching in order to pursue his love for the game.

A look at his wife and children
Bobby married his high school sweetheart, Ann, in 1949. The couple raised six children and had 21 grandchildren. Many football fans might already know that Bobby was a devout Christian who often credited his success in the game to his faith in god.
Two of Bobby’s sons – Tommy (67) and Terry Bowden (65) – served as the head coaches at Clemson University and Auburn University respectively. Bobby and Ann’s youngest son, Jeff, now 58, served as the offensive coordinator at Florida State.
While all the Bowden men had impressive football careers, Bobby’s 1993 and 1999 Florida State teams were the only ones to win the national championship.
Bobby and Ann’s other children, Steve Bowden, Ginger Madden and Robyn Hines made their careers outside of football.
