Kate Walsh is best known for portraying Dr. Addison Montgomery on the long-running ABC medical drama series “Grey’s Anatomy.” She held the role from 2005 until 2012.

Walsh also portrayed Dr. Montgomery in the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off, “Private Practice,” from 2007 to 2013. She has also starred as Rebecca Wright on the NBC sitcom “Bad Judge,” and Olivia Baker on “13 Reasons Why.”

Besides her acting career, Walsh is known for her ill-fated marriage to Alex Young. She has also revealed she cannot have children and has experienced health issues. Find out more about Walsh’s marriage, health troubles, and inability to have kids.

Walsh was born in San Jose, California. However, she grew up in a Catholic household in Tucson, Arizona. She attended Catalina Magnet High School and the University of Arizona, where she studied acting before dropping out.

She relocated to New York, where she joined a comedy troupe called Burn Manhattan. She worked as a waiter at Burger King and Dairy Queen before becoming a model in Japan in the 1980s.

Walsh moved to Chicago and worked with the Piven Theatre Workshop. She starred in the production of the radio play “Born Guilty” on National Public Radio and kicked off her acting career afterward.

WALSH’S MARRIAGE TO YOUNG

A day after ABC announced that it had picked Walsh’s spin-off, “Private Practice,” sources told E! News that the actress and her then-boyfriend and 20th Century Fox executive, Alex Young, were engaged. The lovebirds got engaged three months after they started dating.

Later, Walsh confirmed the engagement and revealed Young proposed to her during their trip to San Francisco. She described him as the most amazing she had ever met.

On September 1, 2007, Walsh and Young tied the knot at the Ojai Presbyterian Church, north of Los Angeles. The actress looked beautiful and radiant on her wedding day and wore a custom-made Monique Lhuillier wedding gown.

The ceremony began with a beautiful rendition of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Bread” by the gospel choir. Over 100 guests attended Walsh and Young’s wedding, including her “Grey’s Anatomy” costars, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, Sara Ramirez, and Chandra Wilson.

“Grey’s Anatomy” creator Shonda Rhimes also attended the nuptials. Actress Kate Beckinsale and her now-former husband, Len Wiseman, were also present.

Besides the display of love at the wedding, the venue for the ceremony was beautifully decorated with hundreds of candles, making for an intimate atmosphere.

Walsh revealed she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2015.

However, Walsh and Young’s marriage lasted just over a year. On December 11, 2008, the 20th Century Fox executive filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. In his divorce filing, he stated their official date of separation as November 22, 2008.

In a statement after Young’s file for divorce, he and Walsh said they remained on friendly terms and asked the media to respect their privacy.

On December 24, 2008, Walsh filed her own divorce papers and said she and Walsh actually split five days earlier than the date he indicated in his filing. According to her, they split on November 17 and not 22.

Walsh also cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce. Neither the actress nor Young requested spousal support.

On February 5, 2010, Walsh and Young’s divorce was finalized. The former couple agreed that the details of their marriage would stay confidential.

Young received $627,000 in the divorce settlement. He also earned future income from Walsh’s residuals from “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” episodes filmed during their marriage.

On the other hand, Walsh received the piano and the debt associated with it. However, they had to flip a coin to resolve the ownership of their furniture.

WHY WALSH CANNOT HAVE KIDS

During an appearance on Maria Menounos’s SiriusXM radio show, Walsh opened up about her infertility struggles and revealed she could no longer have children. She also dispelled the idea that women can have it all, calling it an American myth.

Walsh said she does not have kids and is not going to have them and revealed she went through early menopause. The actress explained that she allowed too much time to go by.

Walsh said her older sister called her and advised her to go and have herself checked because she was going through menopause early.

However, Walsh told her sister she was only scaring her. But when she went to have herself checked, doctors told her she had one egg with a hairline fracture.

Since the discovery, she has learned she is not the only woman suffering from the condition. She also said the experience allowed her to grow in life.

In a 2017 chat with Cosmopolitan.com, Walsh revealed she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2015. She said that her symptoms progressed gradually before her diagnosis.

First, her pilates instructor noticed her right side was dipping, but she did not feel anything was wrong. Also, she started swerving to the right lane while driving.

Walsh became very exhausted that she could drink five cups of coffee and still not feel awake or clear. Later, she began having more cognitive difficulties and could not finish her sentences, which caused her to get alarmed.

Walsh initially thought she was having menopausal symptoms but pushed to see a neurologist. After an MRI scan, she discovered she had a large brain tumor in her left frontal lobe.

Three days after the discovery, she had surgery to remove it. The tumor was benign, and doctors removed all of it. After the surgery, Walsh focused on her recovery and took her time in doing so.

In November 2019, Walsh also underwent hip replacement surgery. She is in perfect health now and doing what she knows how to do best.
