Get your oral health in check with toothpastes as 1 in 3 of us have tooth decay

ONE in three of us has tooth decay, according to the Oral Health Foundation, and cancelled trips to the dentist in the past 18 months could push that figure up.

Brushing your teeth is vital, of course, so today I look at toothpastes. And our Beauty Editor tries out tanning mousses . . .

CHEMICAL-FREE – Many toothpastes contain chemicals that can irritate gums. A.Vogel Echinacea Toothpaste doesn’t. Ingredients include extract of the herb echinacea to relieve inflammation, bacteria-fighting liquorice for fresh breath, and rosemary and tormentil for gum health. Peppermint oil gives it a refreshing taste. Good for the planet and your teeth.

BAKING SODA – The small particles of baking soda in Arm & Hammer 100 Per Cent Natural Gum Protection Baking Soda Toothpaste removes more plaque in hard to reach places and three times more at the gum line than some leading rivals. The alkalinity of baking soda counter balances the acidicity in food and drink to protect from tooth decay. Tastes fresh too. First to come in 100 per cent recyclable packaging.

PROFESSIONAL WHITENING – Colgate Max White Ultimate Renewal is the 1st enzyme-boosted toothpaste with a professional whitening ingredient. Claims to remove stains and reverse 15 years of discolouration. My teeth felt clean and after a couple of weeks looked whiter too. Bit pricey, though!

BUDGET – Formulated with marula oil and vitamin E to nourish and protect the skin. Easy to apply with a mitt and leaves skin with a deep tan with no orange tone at all. I left it on to develop overnight before showering off in the morning. It was better than I was expecting for the price, however it was a little patchy as it was coming off. A decent option for the price.

MID – This is infused with natural tanning actives as well as avocado, chia seed and coconut oils. It is completely clear so it is difficult to see where you’ve missed bits but it means zero transfer on to my white bed sheets. Sadly the colour was a little too orange for my skin tone.

LUXURY – A 90 per cent organic self-tan formulated with all-natural DHA. I thought being natural it wouldn’t be the best but it proved me wrong. It applied evenly and dried quickly. I left it overnight and, once showered, it left a natural, bronzed tan. It lasted two weeks with no patchiness. My new go-to fake tan.
