Google Maps users baffled by small blacked out island compared to Area 51 or Lost

A blacked out island on Google Maps has sparked a mystery among users of the popular site.

The mysterious looking piece of land has caused a stir for forum members on Reddit with one member refers to it as ‘God’s guitar pick.’

Users describe the island as something out of the popular TV series Lost or a covered-up island similar to Area 51, the secretive and classified site in the US desert.

The outside of the island shows a light blue sea with waves crashing against golden sandy beaches around the land.

Yet the middle of the island appears to have been completely blacked out by Google Maps.

Google blacks out areas on maps when people on the database don’t want to be on there or want them to know what is going on there.

People took to Reddit to speculate about why the island was blacked out

After the image was uploaded one person wrote: “God dropped his guitar pick.”

Another said: “My first thought was that it’s censored. It wouldn’t make sense for a natural formation to be black like that in such a shallow, small atoll/island.”

A third person quipped: “Ladies and gentlemen, they have found the Island in Lost.”

In the television series Lost a plane crashes on a mysterious island.

Other places which have been blacked out on Google Maps include Sandy Island which was discovered by Captain Cook in the late 1700s. The area where Sandy Island is supposedly located is mysteriously blurred out.

There’s also an area in the Himalayan Mountains as well as a place deep in the Siberian wilderness where if you look closer, it’s copied and pasted from another place.
