Nuno Espirito Santo refused to give anything away when asked about Tottenham Hotspur potentially signing Lautaro Martinez on Sunday.

A little before Spurs’ visit of Arsenal in a pre-season friendly, The Times reported that the Lilywhites had agreed a £60 million fee with Inter Milan for the Argentine.

But the Portuguese boss said, via Football London: “I will not speak about any player. I will speak only about my Tottenham players, Spurs players, nothing else. Thank you.”

Alasdair Gold, a journalist who exclusively covers Spurs, suggested on Twitter that it may have been a swipe at Pep Guardiola for publicly discussing Harry Kane earlier in the week.

And Graham Roberts has praised Nuno for his discretion, claiming that it was ‘extremely unclassy’ of Guardiola to speak about the North Londoners’ prized asset.

Marquee signing

Indeed, this was a classy way in which to handle transfer speculation and Tottenham fans will hope that the rumour is certainly true.

The North Londoners have signed three players – Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero – this summer but a deal for the Inter marksman might be the most impressive, the marquee one.

There was little to no speculation about it happening before The Times’ report, which illustrates that despite Fabio Paratici commanding a lot of column inches this summer after his move from Juventus, he too works with discretion.
