Most of Kilmer’s profits have come from his professional career as an actor, receiving his big break playing Ice in Tony Scott’s 1986 hit Top Gun, alongside Tom Cruise.

Kilmer then went on to star in 1995’s Batman Forever, playing the titular caped crusader alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman. The film made around $336.6 million globally at the box office, and the role grew his popularity in the pop culture field.

The actor received $7 million to play Batman and later went on to earn another $7 Million for The Saint in 1997 and $6 million for The Island of Dr. Moreau in the same year. 1997 ranked Kilmer as one of the highest paid actors of that year, where he raked in $13 million in profits.

Val released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on August 6, where Kilmer’s legacy is documented.

Additionally, the film explores the more intimate moments in Kilmer’s career as well as his personal life. The documentary also revealed a more comical side to the actor’s methods, with the official description labeling him an “artist and a complex man.”

Directed by Ting Poo and Leo Scott with executive producer duties fulfilled by Ben Cotner, the documentary premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year, which received a standing ovation from attendees.
