‘I hate being branded an influencer – people assume I’m dumb or talentless’

Jodie Weston is tired of being labelled an “influencer”.

The social media star, who shot to fame after appearing on Channel 5 show Rich Kids Go Skint, says people have stereotyped her.

After scrolling through her Instagram feed, some assume she’s an airhead without any depth to her.

And when she wanted to start a new venture as a DJ a few years ago, she found people didn’t take her very seriously.

She told the Daily Star: “People used to laugh at me when I told them I wanted to be a DJ and turn me away before I even showed them what I can do.

“There is a huge stereotype around influencers, that they’re talentless and often stupid so you’re often laughed out of meetings or don’t even get an opportunity in the first place.”

Jodie Weston said there are drawbacks to having “influencer” status

Jodie added: “You always see influencers living it up on holidays and getting brand deals left right and centre, but you never see the aftermath.

“I got bored of having the influencer stigma attached to me and decided to branch out into something that I loved doing – being a DJ.

“But, what I soon realised was that no-one cared what talent I had because all they could see was a stereotype and the word ‘INFLUENCER’.

“If I had to do it all over again I would certainly start my career as a DJ much sooner – and if I then wanted to go into influencing I would have that option.

“But I can’t turn back time all I can do now is try and build my fanbase around the idea that you should never judge a book by its cover.”

Jodie warns others to think carefully before pursuing careers in social media

While some people see “influencing” as a stepping stone to fame and fortune, Jodie warned it may harm them if they want a career change in the future.

She said: “If you see ‘influencing’ as a door to opportunities, make sure that you consider what career it is that you want to go into first.

“Then tailor your influencing towards that i.e. if you love fitness then post mainly fitness/health related content.

“If being a content creator is all you want to do for the rest of your life, or you want a fashion brand deal then maybe it is the right path for you, but you need to be strategic and surround yourself with the right people.

“If you’re interested in progressing your career to become a lecturer or the CEO of a finance company then it may be time to reconsider.”
