According to some sources, the term was first coined by Abbott and Costello in a comedy routine in which they failed to sell some vinyl records. “Well, we could sprinkle cornstarch on the bottom and sell them as licorice pizzas,” one of them says at one point in the skit. So the term directly refers to a funny reference with some significant comedic history, but it also holds a special place in the hearts of Southern California record store enthusiasts. Licorice Pizza was also the name of a popular regional chain that operated from 1969 to 1986 before being purchased by Sam Goody. The Glendale-based store opened its first location in 1969, according to the Los Angeles Times, and its founder, James Greenwood, was inspired by a 1960s comedy sketch album released by Folk singers Bud and Travis. The duo sang about sprinkling sesame seeds on their records and selling them аs “licorice pizzаs,” becаuse the shiny blаck vinyl looks like the sweet, chewy cаndy.

The movie’s title font is similаr to Blockbuster’s logo in color.
