Adventure Time will be getting a spinoff series titled Fionna and Cake.

HBO Max ordered the new series, which will focus on an adult animated series following the sword-wielding adventurer Fionna and her best friend and talking cat named Cake.

The official description for the show reads: “Fionna and Cake — with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov — embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. 

“All the while a powerful new antagonist, determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.”

Billy Wee, senior VP, Comedy and Original Animation, HBO Max told the Hollywood Reporter about Fionna and Cake, saying: “Adventure Time truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process. 

“We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.”

A premiere date for Fionna and Cake has yet to be released.

Fans of Adventure Time were thrilled to hear that the series was getting a spinoff as users flocked to Twitter to discuss the show.

One user wrote: “Well it seems that Cartoon Network/HBO Max would never leave Adventure Time to completely die.

“Because I had a feeling it was gonna continue it’s content in someway shape or form.”

Another added: “Oh wow! This looks like it’s going to be fun.”

A third replied: “Finally, some good news today.”

Fans were also quick to point out that Fionna and Cake are not strangers to Adventure Time as the ninth episode of the third season is dedicated to the characters.

The episode, which aired in 2011, introduced the gender-swapped versions of Adventure Time’s Finn the Human and Jake the Dog.

What is Adventure Time?

Adventure Time followed the adventures of Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, and their friends in the magical land of Ooo. 

The pair interact with Princess Bubblegum, the Ice King, Marceline, BMO, and others.

While the show aired on Cartoon Network, it became an instant hit and a worldwide sensation.

Adventure Time earned a total of eight Primetime Emmy awards including Outstanding Short-Format Animated Program in 2015. 

The series also took home BAFTA honors, Annie Awards, and more.

Due to its popularity, Adventure Time also launched various forms of licensed merchandise, including books, video games, and clothing.
