According to the Evening Standard, Tottenham wonderkid Dennis Cirkin is in talks with Sunderland over a move to the Stadium of Light.

The 19-year-old is highly rated at Spurs, and was even offered a new contract. However, the teenager rejected the deal.

If José Mourinho’s opinion is of any value to Sunderland fans, then there’s plenty of reason to get excited about this potentially imminent transfer.

What has Mourinho said about Sunderland target Cirkin?

As we know, Mourinho can often be very, very critical.

So, for him to praise a player – let alone a teenager – should speak volumes.

As quoted by Football London after he watched Cirkin play in the UEFA Youth League, Mourinho said: “He’s 17, but he’s a kid with a lot of quality, and I look forward to bringing him to train with us, and to help his development.”

Interestingly, the ex-Chelsea boss wanted the defender involved in his first-team setup while at Tottenham, and included Cirkin in first-team training.

Great signing for Sunderland

This is the sort of deal Sunderland should be doing more often.

There is so much unused talent in the reserves of Premier League sides.

Just look at Jadon Sancho, who forced his way out of Manchester City’s gutters to become a star at Borussia Dortmund.

Then there’s also Tariq Lamptey, who would still be playing youth football for Chelsea if Brighton didn’t sign him, in our view.

It’s a unique market, one which the Black Cats must dive into more often.
