McDonald’s vegan McPlant burger contains twice as much salt as a large fries

McDonald’s has now launched its vegan McPlant burger across 250 locations across the UK.

The plant-based burger is an alternative to the traditional Big Mac.

And while it’s a welcome condition for vegan Maccies fans, it may not be as healthy as you think.

That’s because it’s been discovered that the McPlant contains more salt than a large fries.

McDonald’s describes the new burger as “a vegan burger made with a juicy plant-based patty co-developed with Beyond Meat featuring vegan sandwich sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, and vegan cheese in a sesame seed bun.”

The fast food chain also notes that the burger is “vegan certified”.

And despite the fact that it has fewer calories than some McDonald’s burgers – at 427 kcals per burger, it contains a hefty 2.2g of salt.

This is twice the amount as a large fries, which contains 0.8g of salt, according to research from nutritional experts OriGym.

According to their research: “The McPlant falls behind when it comes to its salt content, where it places high on the list with 2.2g and contains more than double the amount of salt into a large portion of large McDonald’s fries,” reports The Express.

A Big Mac has 508 calories, compared with the McPlant’s 427.

And in terms of salt content, the Big Mac contains 2.3g – just 0.1g more than the McPlant burger.

However, the Big Mac soars above the McPlant when it comes to saturated fat content, with 9.5g compared with the vegan burger’s 6.6g.

Talking about the McPlant, McDonald’s said: “McDonald’s UK&I has spent three years on research and development to bring a delicious plant-based offering to British and Irish customers.

“Every element of the McPlant was designed with taste and quality top-of-mind – from the plant-based patty co-developed with Beyond Meat, to innovative vegan cheese based on pea protein that tastes just like McDonald’s iconic cheese slices, and a new vegan sauce.”
