Meghan Markle’s Shiffon pinky ring has a special meaning

We “pinky promise” you’ll appreciate the story behind Meghan Markle’s new jewel.

She and Prince Harry made the publication’s prestigious 100 Most Influential People list this year, and posed for the issue’s cover in coordinating black-and-white outfits styled by Nina and Clare Hallworth.

Along with her ivory button-down shirt and high-waisted trousers, however, Markle’s also seen sporting Shiffon’s signature Duet Pinky Ring ($525) on her left hand, nestled right beside her famous three-stone engagement ring.

Crafted from 14-karat gold and set with a tiny diamond beside a larger one, the adjustable style “represents one woman supporting another through a ‘pinky promise,’” according to the brand’s website.

But Shiffon’s about more than just making pretty baubles: The company also donates 50% of its profits to fund female entrepreneurs, with 11 companies funded to date.

“Our mission at Shiffon is to close that gender gap, particularly in entrepreneurship,” reads a statement on the website’s “About” section.

“Entrepreneurship is about taking action and learning quickly, and we want to give women the opportunity to do that while not being afraid to take risks or fail. We are optimistic that we can begin making this change. Through our efforts, we aim to financially empower a million women across the globe by 2025.”

Additionally, Shiffon uses recycled metals, minimal and repurposable packaging and ethically sourced stones in its designs — surely attractive to the Duchess of Sussex, 40, who’s famously a fan of sustainable styles.

It’s possible Markle was introduced to the brand by pal Serena Williams, who’s also been spotted wearing the Duet Pinky Ring; other A-list fans of the dainty piece include Michelle Obama, Christy Turlington and Nicole Kidman.

In this year’s Time 100 issue, the Sussexes are included in the “Icons” section, with chef José Andrés writing of the pair, “In a world where everyone has an opinion about people they don’t know, the Duke and Duchess have compassion for the people they don’t know. They don’t just opine. They run toward the struggle.”
