A MAN has revealed how his wife used his account to buy herself a necklace for her birthday without telling him.
The man anonymously took to Reddit to ask others whether or not he was in the wrong for making her return it.
In the post the 34-year-old man, who is believed to be from the US, described what led up to his wife buying herself a necklace with his money without telling him.
He said it was his 30-year-old wife’s birthday a couple of weeks ago, and she had made clear about what gift she wanted him to buy her.
He said: “She was very honest and vocal about what she wanted and it was a SL buckled bracelet.”
The man goes on to say that the bracelet cost £220 ($300), and he used his own account, not their joint one to purchase the gift for her.
He added: “Since money is tight this gift broke my back but still I wanted her to feel appreciated at her birthday.”
When her birthday did come around, he said his wife was thrilled with the bracelet and she put it on straight away.
It wasn’t until later, when the birthday celebrations were over that he found out his wife had bought herself another gift using his account.
He said his wife bought herself a £659 ($900) necklace on his account and when he confronted her about it, she said she did as the gift was meant to come from him.
The man adds: “I asked why she bought herself a gift knowing I already purchased her a gift and asked why she used my money.
“She nervously said she wasn’t sure that I was going to get her anything for her birthday and so she planned ahead and bought the necklace.”
He said he was mad as £659 was a lot of money to spend on a gift, especially when he had already bought one and he said it was unnecessary spending.
The man goes on to say: “I told her since I did bring her the gift she wanted then she needed to return the “alternative” gift she bought for herself.
“She refused and argued that I was being heartless and selfish to make her return her birthday gift.”
He told his wife he would return the item himself if she kept refusing, at this point she told her husband she wanted to return the bracelet which cost £220.
He explained to his wife he never agreed to buy the necklace, which cost a lot more money than the original gift, eventually, his wife did return the necklace but is now ‘sulking’.
He writes: “(She said) I’m a controlling jerk with no regard for her feelings on her birthday.
“She got her sister involved and she ended up calling me an abusive a*****e for making money a priority over my wife’s happiness.
“It’s been 2 weeks and she’s still cold shouldering me.”
The majority of Reddit users who commented on the post believed he was in the right and that his wife was out of line for buying the present with his money behind his back.
The top liked comment read: “Not the a*****e. But your wife is. I would check my accounts to make sure she hasn’t purchased any other gifts.”
Another user responded: “Holy cow, money is not tight for our family, but I would freak out (in a bad way) if my husband bought me something for $900! That is insane, setting aside the fact that she STOLE the money.
A third user said: “I get the feeling she has done this before, only this time she got greedy and bought something so big he noticed it.”
