Nottingham Forest want to sign Champ veteran, good news for Sunderland

Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton wants to sign Sheffield Wednesday full-back Liam Palmer as a replacement for Sunderland target Jordan Gabriel, as reported by The Sun (8 August, page 67).

If the two-time European Champions wanted to put the bad memories of a miserable 2020/21 campaign behind them, an opening-day defeat at Coventry City was hardly what the doctor ordered.

Forest conceded twice in the last 15 minutes at a vociferous Ricoh Arena and, while youngster Gabriel held his own at right-back, it’s tempting to wonder whether his second-ever Championship appearance could also be his last in Garibaldi red.

The Sun backs previous claims suggesting League One giants Sunderland are keen on the one-time Arsenal prospect, as is a Blackpool side that sealed promotion from the third tier during Gabriel’s eye-catching loan spell at Bloomfield Road.

And, according to reports, Nottingham Forest have found a potential replacement too – someone far more experienced at Championship level.

29-year-old Scotland international Palmer is out of contract in 2022 and it’s believed Forest boss Hughton is eyeing a “bargain deal” for the long-serving Hillsborough favourite.

Liam Palmer in, Jordan Gabriel out at Nottingham Forest?

Palmer’s arrival could pave the way for Gabriel’s departure.

Then again with many at the City Ground already expressing disappointment amid claims Gabriel, one of the club’s most exciting up-and-coming talents, could be sold, it remains to be seen how they would feel about signing a man who suffered relegation from the Championship just a few months ago.

Carl Winchester, a central midfielder by trade, started at right-back as Sunderland came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic – Charlie Wyke’s Wigan Athletic no less – in their third-tier opener at the weekend.

Could Gabriel, exciting, positive and on the back of an excellent League One loan spell, be the solution to a problem position at the Stadium of Light?
