Panthers trade for Stephon Gilmore after shocking Patriots release

The Carolina Panthers have traded for star cornerback Stephon Gilmore, according to multiple reports.

Gilmore, 31, was surprisingly released by the Patriots early Wednesday after the two sides could not come to terms on a restructured contract. Following the announcement, however, Carolina snatched him up before he could hit waivers.

The Panthers sent a sixth-round pick in 2023 as compensation, according to a press release from the team.

Gilmore was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 with the Patriots, but suffered a quad injury in 2020 that held him out for the beginning of the 2021 season. He has been on the PUP list, but is eligible to come off of it after Week 6.

The Panthers lost their first-round draft pick cornerback Jaycee Horn to a broken foot during Week 3. They traded for another former first-round draft pick in CB C.J. Henderson from Jacksonville, and now will further beef up their secondary with the addition of Gilmore.
