People should wear smelly clothes in a bid to save the planet, experts have said.
New research suggests that people are washing their clothing too often and should be cutting back to be more energy efficient.
The experts recommend that we should be washing jeans just once a month, jumpers just once a fortnight and pyjamas on a weekly basis.
However, the Society of Chemical Industry report says that underwear and gym clothes should still be washed after each wear.
The study suggests that cleaning less often makes clothes last longer with alternatives suggested such as freezing jeans and steaming knitwear.
Orsola de Castro, co-founder of the sustainable clothing group Fashion Revolution, said: “Before washing machines were invented, washing was laborious and exhausting, so there were millions of ways to wash less and make clothes last between each wash.”
