Ryan Kwanten, who portrayed John Stackhouse on Showtime’s vampire drama True Blood, has landed a major new television role. Kindred, a pilot in development at FX and based on Octavia Butler’s 1979 science fiction novel, will star the Australian actor. Variety reported earlier this week that Micah Stock, Gayle Rankin, Austin Smith, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, and David Alexander Kaplan will also star in the new pilot.

Mallori Johnson will make her television debut as Dana, a young Black writer who lives in the present day and on a slave plantation in the nineteenth century. Janicza Bravo, who recently won acclaim for her film Zola, will direct Kindred. The pilot was written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Watchmen).
