What do the ‘Shang-Chi’ post-credits scenes mean?

Mid-credits

In mid-credits scene of “Shang-Chi,” we see Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Katy (Awkwafina) pulled out of their dinner plans by Wong (Benedict Wong).

He needs them for a mysterious new mission, and they are joined by two more iconic characters: The stars of “Avengers: The Hulk” and “Captain Marvel.”

Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) appear via hologram to talk about the Ten Rings.

Liu, who's a newcomer to movies of this boffo scale, is easy to embrace. Since moviegoers don't know him very well yet, his identity revelation and transformation into an Avenger have a believability that, say, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo's did not.

They then explain how the ancestral power wielded by Wenwu (Tony Leung) and Shang raises serious concerns for the heroes about the ancient forces in the universe they have yet to come up against.

Carol then tells them how the Ten Rings appear to have acted as a beacon, sending an indecipherable signal to something, somewhere out in the galaxy.

This seems like a nod to the mystic powers of “The Eternals,” starring Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, who we’ll meet when their first film is out on November 5, 2021.

Post-credits

During Shang-Chi’s post-credits scene, we see Shang’s sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) at her family’s fortress in China.

There, we see her going through her childhood things, seemingly reflecting on the dramatic battle that just took place at her mother’s ancestral home.

With Wenwu dead, Xialing is positioned to finally take over her father’s powerful organization.

See, while Xialing and Shang may have teamed up to take down their dad, this scene gives us the sense that Xialing could continue in the franchise as a hero or as a villain.
