SATURDAY Night Live first aired in 1971 and has racked up over 47 seasons.

Of course, this means that it has hidden plenty of secrets and behind-the-scenes stories not many know.

JOHNNY CARSON WANTED A BREAK

SNL first came to fruition because Johnny Carson, who hosted a late-night show, wanted some time off on the weekends.

The network was then forced to fill in the weekend airtime with another show, which is how Saturday Night Live came to be.

LARRY DAVID’S SKETCHES

Larry David is another funny man in the business and sadly, SNL did not quite agree.

When he worked as one of the writers for the show, only one of his sketches ever saw the light of day.

He was also rumored to not be well-liked on set and was only on the show briefly.

EDDIE MURPHY WAS PERSISTENT

While he may be a top comedian now, Eddie Murphy had to really work to get a chance on SNL.

The Dr. DooLittle star, who was just 19 at the time, apparently only appeared on the show because he called the talent coordinator non-stop for seven days straight.

EMMA STONE FELL IN LOVE

One of the cutest well-kept secrets of the SNL set is that Emma Stone met her now-husband Dave McCary on the show.

He was a segment director when she appeared and they began dating in 2019.

They tied the knot in 2020 and had their first child together in March 2021.

BILL HADER CAN’T STAY IN CHARACTER

During his time on SNL, Bill Hader often played a character called Stefan.

Stefan’s job was to report “the hottest events” in New York City, but he could never get through the segment with a poker face.

The IT star became famous for continuously breaking character.

KANYE WEST YELLED AT CREW

Kanye West appeared on SNL back in 2016 and his appearance caused quite a stir when he popped on a MAGA hat.

However, what people don’t know is that Ye also yelled at crew backstage for moving something of his.

Comedian Pete Davidson has talked several times about not wanting to be associated with his appearance on the show, which is why he jumped ship at the end of the episode.

MEN LIKE TO DO WHAT?

Tina Fey, who was the first woman to hold a head writer position on the show in 1999, revealed there were cups everywhere on set for one specific reason.

In an interview with the New Yorker, she revealed:  “In the Weekend Update offices – which were like the smarter but meaner older brother of the regular writers’ offices – there weren’t any cups. There was a jar. It was a jar of p*ss with a lid on it, and, judging by its consistency, I suspect that the writers sometimes spat into it. Or that one of them was terribly ill.

“You could see it when you came in the door, backlit by the afternoon sun, and at first I thought it was a test. If you saw the p*ss jar and dared to ignore it and continue into the room, you were welcomed. ‘Welcomed’ is too strong a word.

“You were… one of the guys? Nope, you know what? I’m just projecting. It couldn’t have been a test, because they really didn’t give a f*ck whether you came into the room or not.”

JOHN BELUSHI DID NOT THINK WOMEN WERE FUNNY

One of the most shameful and sexist secrets of the show was John Belushi’s thoughts about women.

It was alleged that John did not like the sketches by female writers when he was on SNL. He would not perform in them and he would not think they were funny.

STEVEN SEAGAL WAS BANNED

Many cast members have claimed that Steven Seagal was one of the toughest people to work with because of “his unwillingness to let loose, make fun of himself, and trust the writers and comedians,” as David Spade put it.

During an episode that he hosted, ratings tanked and it was tough to watch as he did not like the jones being made because he did not understand them.

The episode is almost impossible to find online, has been left out on Netflix, and caused Steven to be banned from being on the show ever again.
