Tesco shoppers praise new ‘amazing’ system after successful trial in UK stores

Tesco shoppers have praised the supermarket’s service that helps the country to recycle more.

The supermarket giant launched its plastics recycling service where customers could bring in food wrappers.

Once the crisp packets and vegetable bags were collected they were sent to be recycled.

Now after an overwhelming response from customers, the chain has decided to extend its trial to all of its large UK stores.

It expects to collect more than 1,000 tonnes a year and will recycle as much of this material as possible.

And the recycled material will be used into products and packaging sold in Tesco stores.

The supermarket’s recycling points allow customers to bring in their old wrappers and packets

In the trial stores, around 85% of customers said it helped them to recycle more than they would have done otherwise.

Customers also reported they liked the convenience of being able to combine recycling with their shopping.

Tesco’s Director of Quality, Sarah Bradbury, said the chain is tackling the impact of plastics by reducing it as much as possible.

She said: “I’m delighted we’re rolling out collection points so more customers can help us stop plastic from going to waste.”

The collection points allow shoppers to recycle items like clear film, crisp packets, fruit and vegetable bags and sweet wrappers.

Even items like salad and bread bags can also be recycled.

Marcus Gover, CEO WRAP, said: “Tackling plastic bags and wrapping is the UK Plastics Pact’s number one priority, and increasing front of store collection points is a great step forward.

“As little as 6% of this problematic plastic is collected and recycled in the UK, despite making up nearly a quarter of all plastic packaging by weight.”

He added: “By offering shoppers a simple and consistent collections system Tesco is helping to ensure that much more of this problem plastic is captured and goes on to be recycled.

“I welcome this move which will help considerably towards the UK’s Plastics Pact’s target of increasing plastic recycling.”

Shoppers took to social media to share their delight over the new service.

One wrote: “Amazing work by Tesco, other supermarkets need to follow,” while a second added: “Yet another store heading in the right direction by helping to tackle plastic.”
