TGI Fridays claim we’ve all been eating our burgers the ‘wrong’ way this whole time

Burger experts from TGI Fridays are encouraging foodies to try flipping their burgers the other way around and eating them upside down to experiment with flavour

Have you tried flipping it?

There are a number of food hacks out there that supposedly make things taste even better, or make certain items easier to eat.

For instance, we’ve seen how some people like to cut cupcakes in half and sandwich the pieces together so the frosting from the top ends up in the middle and it’s less tricky to bite into.

And now apparently you should also consider eating burgers in a very different way.

According to burger connoisseurs at TGI Fridays, flipping a burger and eating it upside down can actually improve the taste.

This is because, with a thicker bun underneath to absorb the juices from the burger, it’s a clever way to keep the flavour in.

To encourage the British public to ‘flip it’, Fridays is excited to have partnered with Charlotte Worthington, BMX freestyle Olympic gold medallist and former chef to inspire.

Charlotte swapped her BMX kit for Fridays red and white stripes and took ‘flipping it’ to the extreme as she back flipped over burgers and even tried eating them while upside down herself at Adrenaline Alley in Corby, her home training park.

Speaking about the challenge, Charlotte said: “I had so much fun getting the chance to flip burgers on my bike for once, rather than as a chef!

“While I can’t recommend burger fans try eating a burger upside down mid BMX run, I can say that flipping your burger is a revelation. Give it a go!”

The restaurant chain has also launched the #FlipItChallange asking fans to share an image or video of them testing out eating its new range of burgers upside down on social media, tagging @TGIFridaysUK and including #FlipItChallange to be in with a chance of winning one of several £50 Fridays vouchers.

Fridays have also created a ‘How to’ video for those looking to trial flipping their burger, that you can find on their YouTube channel.

A Fridays burger expert added: “The reason that many say a burger tastes better when eaten ‘upside down’ is that the top bun is thicker. So, flipping your burger means that there is more bread underneath to absorb the juices and flavours from the burger and toppings as you bite into it.

“It also means that your tongue meets the toppings first and the burger second. Whether that tastes better to you is down to personal preference – so give it a try and let us know what you find!”

Fridays top tips on how to flip:

Fridays burger experts have created a video sharing the key reason you should flip and also show burger fans how to do it, because according to experts there is an optimum way to eat your burger upside down effectively:

  • When picking up your burger, don’t just pick up as normal (with thumbs underneath) and try and turn in mid air, this could get messy.
  • We recommend placing your thumbs on top of the burger facing inwards with your fingers underneath.
  • This means that as you pick the burger up and bring your fingers round to the top the burger will naturally turn upside down for a much easier eating experience.
