Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic may be masking the real reason for the lorry driver shortage: an aging workforce. According to a think tank, HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) drivers in the UK have an average age of 53, with many looking forward to leaving the sedentary and lonely job. A shortage of drivers has left petrol stations understocked, resulting in a supply chain crisis in the United Kingdom.
It has sparked panic buying among motorists, with long lines at gas stations to fill up vehicles.
There is a shortage of around 100,000 truck drivers, owing in part to stricter immigration regulations. However, the government has announced that in the run-up to Christmas, it will issue 5,000 temporary visas to foreign lorry drivers. The shortage of HGV drivers began less than a week ago, but the International Longevity Centre-UK (ILC) described it as “yet another predictable аnd predicted crisis.”
