‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Inks Netflix Deal, But Season 3 Not Guaranteed

The Witcher’s Showrunner Lauren Hissrich may have inked a deal with Netflix. However, it does not mean that it has to do with The Witcher. Unfortunately, The Witcher Season 3 is not even a guarantee.

In addition, there could be some uncertainty with financially securing the star of the series, Henry Cavill.

What all did Hissrich reveal at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour this week?

The Witcher Has Not Been Renewed For Season 3

At the recent TCA Summer Press Tour, The Witcher’s showrunner, Lauren Hissrich confirmed that the Netflix Fantasy series has not yet been renewed. According to PC Gamer, this was a question that is everyone’s mind. That is because the popular streaming service is notorious for canceling shows.

The showrunner was direct in answering this question. “There has been no formal renewal.” While The Witcher brought in 75 million viewers, Bridgerton has since beat that record. It sounds like for the show to be renewed, they will need to beat the romantic Regency series.

However, it doesn’t sound like she is spending a lot of time dwelling on whether Netflix will renew. She is focused on Season 2, otherwise, there will not be a Season 3. Hissrich said, “In fact, right now my focus is on Season 3. I mean, we have this airdate now, we’re going to launch on December 17. There is still a lot of work to be done in post-production. So I’m back and forth between Los Angeles and London completing that, and that is just where all of our focus is right now because we need a great Season 2 if we have a hope of having a Season 3.”

Could Netflix Cancel The Witcher?

Unfortunately, based on what Lauren has to say, The Witcher has to perform remarkably well to get Season 3. On the plus side, Netflix has not announced that this is the final season. Another positive is that back in July, Netflix hosted the very popular Witchercon. It would seem that if they were going to rush to cancel the series, they would not go to all of this trouble to stream the exclusive interviews and content for fans around the world.

Yet, there have been other issues. The cost to film movies during Covid has been a factor for many programs. They had to shut down more than once due to Covid. In addition, Henry Cavill had a serious injury on set back in December.

The Witcher’s Geralt Of Rivia, Henry Cavill, May Need More Money

However, renewing The Witcher for  Season 3 could mean more expenses. We may assume at this point that Netflix has not secured and locked in the salary of the different cast members. That includes the series incredibly popular star, Henry Cavill.

One of the concerns the publication addressed is the possibility that The Witcher’s own Geralt of Rivia, Henry Cavill, will need to be paid more. Although the Man of Steel star has not said anything about money, it would seem that his star power, his athletic ability, and his attention to detail for this series are tremendous. Moreover, Cavill is in huge demand.

Right now, he is filming Apple’s Argylle, and will soon be back as the hot Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s second Enola Holmes movie with Millie Bobbie Brown. Cavill has signed onto Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot. First, Stahelski needs to film a couple of John Wick movies.

Next, Cavill signed onto the RomCom The Rosie Project. Like Highlander, there is a lot of uncertainty if and when production will commence. We cannot forget, for the past few years, Cavill has been considered a James Bond contender. In fact, Cavill lost the role to Daniel Craig.

If Netflix wants to secure Cavill, they will need to move fast, and be ready to pay for his contributions.

Lauren Hissrich Inks Deal With Netflix

Netflix has moved fast on one thing. They have signed The Witcher’s showrunner to a multi-year contract. Unfortunately, this does not guarantee that her series will continue. According to Deadline, Lauren Hissrich made a statement about the new contract. “While my heart belongs to The Witcher Franchise, I equally look forward to digging in on other exciting projects for their global audience in the years to come.”

Netflix drops The Witcher Season 2 on Friday, December 17, 2021.
