Despite a 2002 arrest on charges of sexually abusing and urinating on a 14-year-old girl, he remained a major figure in the music industry, collaborating with artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Usher, and Jay-Z. However, in the wake of the 2019 Lifetime documentary series Surviving R Kelly , which gave a voice to many of his accusers, the majority of whom are young Black women, many people cut ties with the singer.
