What is ‘beaning’ on TikTok? Viral Baked Bean trend slammed

Some of TikTok’s most popular videos are pranks.

There’s just something about watching someone play a trick on their friend, partner or family member that’s so hilarious, and TikTok users can’t get enough of it.

However, kids on the app are being slammed for taking part in the latest prank trend ‘beaning’ which is causing havoc amongst British neighbourhoods.

So, what is ‘beaning’? Here’s what the term really means.

WHAT IS ‘BEANING’ ON TIKTOK?

This week, a new TikTok trend has emerged called ‘beaning’.

It involves getting a tin of baked beans, be it Heinz, Branston or Sainsbury’s own brand, and smearing it across people’s doorsteps before running away.

The challenge is similar to egging someone’s house, a well-known vandalism prank that involves throwing eggs at someone’s property.

However, for this version, you use beans, leaving a nasty surprise when residents leave their house.

THEY CALL THEMSELVES #BEANBANDITS

Kids who are taking part in this trend have even come up with a name for themselves, the Bean Bandits.

Videos with the hashtag #BeanBandits have already had 1.9 million views on TikTok, and that number is quickly rising.

The trend appears to have started in the UK, where baked beans are popular, but has since gone viral across the world.

In countries where baked beans aren’t available, people are using other types of beans, like kidney or pinto.

POLICE URGE SHOPS NOT TO SELL BEANS TO KIDS

The trend has become so widespread in the UK that West Yorkshire Police has even urged shops not to sell beans to kids.

Police officer Michelle Owens told the Yorkshire Post: “It has come to the attention of the police that a new trend has started by groups of youths called ‘beaning’.”

“This involves youths throwing the contents of a can of beans over properties, very similar to the trend of throwing eggs at properties,” she continued.

“If you work in a shop, please can you be aware of youths buying large quantities of cans of beans, if you have children living at home, please be mindful if you see them removing cans of beans from the family home.”
