Why Money Heist is the best Netflix show you’ve never watched

HERE’S what we can expect from sixth and final season of the most-watched non-English language show on Netflix, Money Heist.

It’s little wonder that the plot of the fifth and final season of thrilling Spanish crime drama, Money Heist, has been more closely guarded than a gold bullion-filled bank vault.

“I can’t tell you how the series is going to end – they would cut my throat,” laughed Álvaro Morte, who plays The Professor, the Houdini-like mastermind behind the two spectacular heists attempted by the show’s red-jumpsuit-clad gang over the five series.

“I’m on episode eight and I’ve yet to receive episode nine and 10, so I can’t tell you if it’s as good or not. Man, I hope so.

“What I can tell you is that it is a season with a lot of tension, a lot of action, and it’s very exciting.

“It’s very rewarding for an actor, but it’s quite exhausting, in a good way.

“My connection with this character has given me a lot, I really enjoy it and I have a great time every time The Professor has to do his thing.

“Everything about working with this team has been a great experience. The best memory I have, without a doubt, is the team.”

The new series – which is divided into two volumes of five episodes – picks up from where we left the gang, stuck inside the Bank of Spain, surrounded by police.

And Pedro Alonso, who plays The Professor’s brother, Berlin, agrees that fans can look forward to the most action-packed season so far.

“It’s rock’n’roll,” he said, “because from what I’ve seen, we’re making a war movie but within four walls.

“It’s an epic war film. We had different worlds in the previous seasons and now it’s a new world.”

One popular character who won’t be part of that new world is Nairobi (Alba Flores), who was shockingly killed off towards the end of the fourth series.

“Nairobi represented the heart of the gang in a way,” explains director Jesús Comenar.

“But I think that in this final season she would have had a hard time fitting in because this is a season of direct confrontation.

Of course, what many of the show’s millions of fans will be wondering is why call it a day now, when Money Heist is at the height of its popularity?

“We’ve made over 2,000 minutes of fiction with two heists,” said Jesús.

“I think we’ve exhausted some of the characters’ emotional arcs. We’ve told a lot and I think it’s a good time to stop.

“It’s a very climatic season and I think it’s always better to leave sooner rather than later.

“We have many examples in international fiction of series that we think dragged on too long.

“And I think the smartest thing to do when a series is at the peak of its success is to leave with a bang and make a season that is very special in many ways.

“It is very different from all the previous seasons and we’ve put all our eggs in one basket to go out with a bang.”

By the sounds of it, Jesús means that quite literally…

“We’ve built a set that’s been littered with explosive charges so we can blow it up,” he said.

“I don’t think a set has ever been so short-lived in a series. It’s a spectacular set, by the way.

“It’s the luxury dining room of the Bank of Spain and the Gold Museum, which are on the top floor of the bank, and the armoury. This season is one of total destruction.”

Money Heist series five episodes 1-5 are available now on Netflix, with episodes 6-10 following in December.
