Much like “Star Wars,” “Star Trek” is one of the most famous outer-worldly franchises in history, but not a single one of its actors has ever been to space… until now.
William Shatner, the famous Captain Kirk from the beloved series, will have the opportunity to see space with his very own eyes on October 12, while aboard Jeff Bezo’s Blue Origin New Shepard NS-18.
The 90-year-old recently made a guest appearance at New York Comic-Con, where he had the chance to talk to the audience about his upcoming trip to the final frontier.
However, Shatner made quite an ironic and funny revelation – that he is “terrified” of going to space. The actor joked and laughed at the thought of Kirk himself being afraid of outer space.
He is about to officially become the oldest person to ever be sent to space.
Shatner added that he wasn’t actually terrified, and then that he was again, stating that the feeling comes and goes like “a summer cold.” He also shared what he hopes to find when he goes up there:
“You have three minutes to look into the abscess of space and the beauty of this oasis of Earth, and I was planning on pressing my nose against the window, you know?”
The beloved actor said that when he does look out the window, his only hope is that he doesn’t see somebody looking back at him, hinting at the possibility of alien life passing by the rocket.
According to him, the idea of going to space was actually suggested by “Better Late Than Ever” producer Jason Ehrlich, who reached out to him almost two years ago about rockets sending people into space.
The “Star Trek” star recalled how Ehrlich tried to sell him the idea of how exciting it would be to finally see Captain Kirk in space, but he said that he wasn’t really convinced at first:
“I said, ‘Jason, for God’s sakes, man, nobody cares about Captain Kirk going up into space. You know, it was 55 years ago, by God, man!'”
Eventually, Shatner came around to it, and now he is about to officially become the oldest person to ever be sent to space. However, he doesn’t want to be remembered by that title.
