TikTok user shows off easy ‘homemade’ French braid

French plaits are the perfect hairstyle for when you want your hair out of your face – but they can be pretty tough to recreate yourself.

Thankfully, a mum-of-three has revealed how to create a mock French braid yourself – and it’s so easy.

Mackenzie McKee shared the step-by-step demonstration in a three-minute TikTok tutorial, which amassed a staggering 8.7 million views in just a few days.

“Y’all this is so simple. You can finally French braid your own hair,” she wrote in the caption of the video.

Typically, when creating a French braid you would separate the hair at the front of your head into three sections, but in Mackenzie’s tutorial, you only need to grab two pieces of hair.

After brushing her hair, she takes two strands of hair and twists one over the other, before dropping one piece and incorporating a section from the loose hair.

She repeats this motion until she’s at the nape of her neck, where she begins to do a regular braid to keep the twist in place.

After securing with a hairband she does the same on the other side.

In a follow-up video, Mackenzie revealed what her hair looked like the next day once she had taken out the braid.

After unravelling the hair, she was left with curls that she claims are prettier than those you’d typically get from a regular French braid.

Since being posted, the video has been received more than 786,000 likes and almost 6,000 comments from thankful viewers.

One person said: “As a licensed cosmetologist, baby you did beautifully. Thank you for teaching a simple way to get a mock French braid.”

Another wrote: “Finally something I can actually do! Thank you for explaining this so well.”

A third commented: “I just tried this and it’s so easy and looks good. I always wanted to find easy ways to braid my hair. I’m horrible at French braiding lol.”

But a few people were quick to point out that the hairstyle she was demonstrating was a flat twist, not a braid.

Defending Makenzie, one user said: “For everybody that’s mad: lots of us have grown up without people who taught us how to do hair or makeup. Tutorials like this are a big deal.”

While someone else put: “Everybody wears this style, we all just call it something different and that’s perfectly fine. That’s the point of different cultures and race.”
