It’s shouldn’t be this way but the sad fact is that travelling alone in public can feel unsafe as a woman, especially late at night.

One woman’s train journey home went viral after she shared how a fellow passenger stepped in to keep her safe after she fell asleep.

Actress Sabrina Aloueche posted the account on Twitter – where she admitted she initially thought the man was a weirdo before discovering what he’d done.

Her post said: “I fell asleep last night during my four-hour trip back to London. Fell asleep hard. Table seat all to myself so had my bag on the table opened, my phone sat on the table.

“My AirPods in my ears with music on. PASSED OUT. I woke up as we were getting into Euston and noticed that apart from a group of very drunk very noisy lads on the far side of the carriage there was one other man.

“And he’d chosen to sit opposite me on the table seat. My mind raced. Are my things all here. Was he filming me. Etc.

“As I got off the “weirdo man who decided to sit next to a sleeping girl on a nearly empty carriage” tapped me on the shoulder.

“‘I didn’t mean to startle you, just didn’t want you sleeping unattended.’ He’d sat there the whole journey to make sure I was able to sleep safely.”

Her post went viral, with many thanking Sabrina for sharing it.

One person wrote: “Heartwarming story. He is the man we all want nearby at times like this. All men should be like him.”

Another added: “An absolute heartwarming anecdote. Bless that gentleman, whomsoever he may be.”

Others were left divided, with one commenting: “This story is a prime example of how the patriarchy gaslight women. All. The. Time.

“Man sits next to sleeping woman is creepy…. until he says he was protecting her. But….. he could protect her from a few seats away, right? Unless he is looking for credit?”

But Sabrina replied: “With respect, this man acted in a way that would make it appear I was not travelling alone.

” However, you want to paint it he was one of the good guys and I was very thankful to have protection like that. Should we need protection? No. Do we? Probably.”

Another added: “This happened to me as well but it was a London bus, after a night out I fell asleep and a lady stayed with me until I woke up to make sure I was ok.”
