After getting fed up with too-soft travel pillows, one woman has shared a clever alternative for getting some shut-eye on a plane.
A Los Angeles-based vlogger known as Hello Kristen has revealed her budget-friendly solution to keeping your neck comfy and upright on a flight.
In a now-viral TikTok clip, she begins: “I came up with one of the best ideas of my life.”
Kristen admits she’s purchased five different travel neck pillows in the past, and they’ve all failed to get her to sleep.
“I wished something would hold my neck in place, something like a neck brace,” she says.
That’s when she had her “epiphany”.
“Why not just buy a neck brace?” she says.
The vlogger shows off a US$7 (approx. $10) one she purchased, adding that it can be covered with a scarf or sweater for anyone worried about how it looks on a flight.
She concludes: “When you lay back, your neck isn’t going anywhere”.
TikTok users were quick to praise the flight hack as “genius”, with comments ranging from “Best idea ever!” to “I discovered this a few years ago, it’s amazing.”
“Omg thank you, I travel a lot and this will help me so much,” one critic wrote, with a second agreeing: “I discovered this a few years ago, it’s amazing”.
For those keen to give the hack a go, soft neck braces are available to purchase from most pharmacies — in Australia, Chemist Warehouse sells an adjustable neck collar support from $10.99.
Kristen’s hot tip comes on the back of another viral TikTok travel pillow hack.
Earlier this year, TikTok user @sidneyraz demonstrated the correct way to use a travel pillow, spinning it around to rest above his chest. In the clip, he claimed that by wearing it back-to-front “you can actually sleep on a flight.”
The simple tactic prevents your neck from slumping forward.
