Tom Hardy sparked a wave of complaints for mumbling in BBC Thriller Taboo

British actor Tom Hardy sparked a wave of complaints from viewers for “incoherent mumbling” in 2017 BBC thriller Taboo.

However a US team claims to have discovered women actually like men to speak slightly unintelligibly.

Study leader Dr Daniel Stehr, from the University of California, said: “From a sexual selection standpoint, males with traits that are slightly more masculine than average are typically preferred.

“In this context it would make males with less clear speech more attractive.”

In the first analysis of its kind, 42 volunteers were recorded after being asked to perform various speech tasks.

Their vocals were then ranked for attractiveness.

Researchers found clear speech tones were deemed much more appealing in females than males.

Dr Stehr claims his team’s findings contradict popular belief.

He said: “Much received wisdom and many vocal coaches would encourage people to slow down and carefully enunciate to make a better impression on their audience.”

Unintelligible speech among male actors has a long history in Hollywood.

Marlon Brando was given the nickname “Mumbles” by his 1955 Guys and Dolls co-star Frank Sinatra.

Oscar-winner Brando put cotton wool in his mouth to make his dialogue less clear while playing Don Corleone in 1972’s The Godfather.

Audiences also struggled to understand the late Heath Ledger as the Joker or Christian Bale’s Batman in 2008’s The Dark Knight.
