If you’re a parent, or just a clumsy person, then you’ll know the pain of spilling something on your carpets.

You can’t throw them in the wash and you can’t mop them so getting stains out of the fabric is a tricky job.

And, many spills once dried can leave disgusting smells embedded in the carpet.

Luckily, there are things you can do to get stains or unpleasant odours out of your carpeting – and some Mrs Hinch fans have shared their top methods.

Mrs Hinch, AKA Sophie Hinchliffe, is an influencer who has over 4million Instagram followers thanks to her cleaning hacks and routines.

Since making it big in the last few years, Sophie’s fans have created a number of Facebook pages to share their own tricks.

On one such page which has over 100,000 members a woman asked for help removing stains from her carpets.

She said: “My carpets have had a lot of wee wee accidents on them recently from potty training my daughter and having a new kitten. My house stinks and it’s getting me down a lot.

“How do I get rid of the smell?”

Hundreds of helpful cleaning fans spoke up to help the woman out, but one cleaning tool stood out amongst the rest as scores recommended it, reports the Express.

Baking soda.

You can pick up a tub for £1.40 from Sainsbury’s or £1 at the Poundshop.

So, if you’re on a budget this trick won’t break the bank.

One person said: “Baking soda naturally neutralises odours.

“Sprinkle it liberally on the damp area or even an old urine stain, and work the powder gently into the fibers of any fabric, rug or carpet. Let the baking soda sit overnight for maximum odour absorption, then vacuum it up to remove the smell completely.”

Another cleaning obsessive added: “And it works, I can vouch for that!”

While a third noted: “Sprinkle bicarb over every area leave as long as possible, overnight is best, then hoover up, it absorbs any wetness that’s underneath and gets rid of the smell too.”

Alternatively, one woman recommended using dish soap, and wrote: “Wash with Biological washing liquid in warm water thoroughly, rinse thoroughly then when dry spritz with surgical spirit.”

While another had an old-fashioned but effective solution to bad smells in the carpets.

They said: “My daughter had an accident on our stair carpet a while back. I tried everything but the smell was awful, I think she must have done it a few times without us noticing.

“Anyway, my nana swore by orange peel to get rid of the bad smell. Every time I peeled an orange I would just put the skin on the stairs.

“Within two weeks, maybe slightly less, the smell was completely gone! I know having orange peels around the carpets isn’t ideal, but it works!”
