Its school district serves around <a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ccd\/districtsearch\/district_detail.asp?Search=2&amp;details=1&amp;ID2=2702970&amp;DistrictID=2702970\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3,500 students.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Superintendent of the Albert Lea Area Schools, Dr. Mike Funk, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alschools.org\/site\/default.aspx?PageType=3&amp;DomainID=4&amp;ModuleInstanceID=382&amp;ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&amp;RenderLoc=0&amp;FlexDataID=3149&amp;PageID=1\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> Thursday that 36 students tested positive for COVID-19 after just five days of school, and 290 students were exposed to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>The district has not seen cases like these since last October, Funk said, announcing additional restrictions for students next week.<\/p>\n<p>From Monday, students in the sixth to 12th grades will be required to keep masks on throughout the school day, except during lunch, according to the statement. Students participating in indoor activities \u2014 like volleyball and swimming \u2014 will also have to keep their masks on when not active.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The district had &#8220;minimal procedures in place&#8221; before this, Funk told <a href=\"https:\/\/minnesota.cbslocal.com\/2021\/08\/26\/290-albert-lea-students-quarantine-after-36-positive-covid-cases-in-1st-week\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS Minnesota<\/a>, including the optional use of masks for students and staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The start of the school year in the US has coincided with the spread of the Delta variant and an increase in COVID-19 cases in children.
