Aston Villa made contact with Manchester United to try to sell them Jack Grealish before he made the move to Manchester City, according to The Athletic.
It is being reported this morning that Villa did not want to sell Grealish to City, but they could do nothing after the Premier League champions triggered his £100 million release clause.
The Villans called United and asked if they would like to sign Grealish – described by City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, as “an incredible talent”, as quoted in The Athletic – n some sort of a player swap deal.
The Red Devils admire Grealish and would have considered a move next summer, but the England international attacking midfielder only wanted to join City.
The reason why Villa did not want to sell Grealish to City, according to the report, is that they are ‘concerned their success and financial clout are damaging the competition’.
The report in The Athletic is quite interesting.
Even when they were getting £100 million for Grealish, the Villans were not keen on selling him to City and looked at other avenues.
This indicates that Villa are not exactly in dire need of money, which is encouraging for the fans.
It suggests that those running the club are doing so in a proper way and have a clear plan.
