Las Vegas Nurse Uses Her Days off to Brush and Braid Patients’ Hair

This month, a nurse brought tears to people’s eyes when she went above and beyond her call of duty and brushed patients’ hair. She did this on her days off and inspired many in the process.

Las Vegas ER nurse Brooke Johns, who has worked with sick people for two and a half years, recognized that many patients are too unwell to tend to their appearances.

She decided to do something about this and visited Southern Hills Hospital on her days off to help patients that have neglected their hair in the midst of their various health battles.

HUMAN TOUCH IS THERAPEUTIC

Johns has been brushing and braiding patients’ hair for five months—a simple act but one that has a far-reaching effect. She believes this human connection provides the patients with a boost that helps them heal.

The nurse shared:

“There’s something therapeutic about the human touch, as well. Human talking, human touching, it’s that connection that we’re all hard-wired for.”

A DIFFERENT PERSON

Johns began this act of kindness because one of her friends was sick in the hospital. She noticed that her friend was too tired and weak to see to her hair. She assisted her, and after some pampering, she noticed a change in her friend.

Johns’ caring gesture has sparked a spirit of kindness within the hospital and has had unexpected consequences.

Johns said: “She was a different person when I left that room.” The kind-hearted nurse paid a visit to Sierra Stein recently, and the patient revealed that Johns was the one who nudged her to seek professional medical attention.

NURSE MAKES IT FEEL LIKE HOME

Johns’ caring gesture has sparked a spirit of kindness within the hospital and has had unexpected consequences. More nurses have joined her endeavor to tend to their patient’s hair. Johns also comforted her patients during an uncertain time.

Stein stated:

“COVID is going around, and there’s a lot of isolation. You can’t have visitors or someone to come in … and to have someone just to be able to braid your hair makes you feel like you’re at home again.”

SPREADING MORE KINDNESS

Johns has more plans to spread love and kindness, and her next endeavor involves being a Disney princess. When visitation restrictions allow, the nurse stated that she would be making her way to Sunrise Children’s Hospital.

To put a smile on the young patients’ faces, Johns explained that she would be dressed up as Elsa from “Frozen.” Her actions have struck a chord with many.

NURSE ANGEL

One netizen expressed: “You brought tears to my eyes, thank you, Nurse Angel. You are giving me hope, your kindness is appreciated, and it is contagious.”

Johns’ contagious kindness is bound to make a difference, and it seems like the young nurse still has many more ideas and plans to brighten up the lives of her patients.
