Liverpool ‘plotting £30m Marco Asensio deal for January’ after Jurgen Klopp approval

Liverpool are plotting a £30m move for Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio in January as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad for a title challenge.

The Reds surrendered their Premier League trophy to Manchester City last campaign and finished 17 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side following a second-half season slump.

The German boss dipped into the summer transfer market once to pull off the early signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig but the French international was the sole addition during the window.

It’s been just seven days since Transfer Deadline Day but Klopp has already firm sights set on January and the chance to bring in some quality to the middle of the park.

Topping the German manager’s shopping list is Marco Asensio.

Spanish outlet todofichajes allege that the Spaniard does not fit into Carlo Ancelotti’s plans and would be available for a fee of around €35 million.

Asensio has been looking for a route out of the Santiago Bernabeu for some time and would be open to moving to England.

The report states the signing would have the approval of Jurgen Klopp who hopes to resurrect the 25-year-old’s career.

The Reds are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements following the departures of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri to PSG and Lyon respectively.

And with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita yet to prove themselves as regular first-team starters, Klopp has had to put his faith in 18-year-old Harvey Elliott, who was on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers last season.

But in a further blow to Klopp, the youngster was forced to withdraw from the England under-21 squad this week which could be due to injury, leaving the Liverpool midfield threadbare.
