Mum gobsmacked after artist sells illustrations of her family home for £40

A woman has revealed how she’s annoyed after an artist sold paintings of her home.

The mum opened up on a popular parenting website to share details of how she spotted the sale online.

Writing about the experience on Mumsnet, she explained how she lives in a “notable” house in her local community.

She said: “It’s notable in the area due to the family being a prominent family of the time.

“We aren’t a notable family now at all, but there’s enough of the older generation around to still remember.

“It’s a beautiful couple of houses, so people notice them.”

And she was left slightly unimpressed after making the discovering.

The woman described her home as ‘notable’

She added: “I’m feeling quite annoyed about this, as she has never made contact to ask permission.

“Am I being unreasonable to feel like this, and would you make contact to ask her to remove it from her website?

The artist appears to be a well-established illustrator of books and original pieces of work, so hopefully not a struggling artist.

“She has drawn many local buildings, not just mine, and her website shows her drawing on location.

“The artist may well have drawn from a photograph, but it’s equally likely she drew with the house in front of her.”

She admitted: “I’m not making an assumption that that’s definitely what she’s done, but if it’s a drawing from life then that’s likely.

“The drawing is of the house only, no other features at all.

“The title is the name of the house, which is the same as the area that it’s in, so really very identifiable.”

Since the woman shared her dilemma on the forum, people were left split about the situation.

One said: “I wouldn’t be happy about that. It doesn’t matter if it’s a notable house in the area, it’s your family home.”

Another added: “I understand how you feel. Our house is distinctive and I have seen people outside taking photos more than once.

“In our case, they aren’t trespassing to do so, but it still feels strange.”

Others didn’t take the woman’s side, as one said: “How has this really negatively impacted your life?

“You are lucky enough to have inherited a lovely home that an artist wants to paint. Count your blessings.”

Another wrote: “She could have drawn it from an old photo or been given permission by one of your relatives.”
