It is said that Liverpool are ‘open’ to offers for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who came through the ranks at St Mary’s as a fresh-faced teenager.

A stint at Arsenal followed after breaking through down at the South Coast and many years later Liverpool were snapping up his talents for £35 million (BBC Sport).

But it could be argued that during both spells at the Emirates and at Anfield, it hasn’t really worked out for the technically gifted midfielder.

Injuries have hampered the England international’s game time on Merseyside, but he also hasn’t been able to find that form or rhythm when provided with the chances out on the pitch.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain were to return to Southampton then he would certainly be a bigger fish in a smaller pond.

And for this stage of his career, where he needs to get it back on track because the 27-year-old is entering his peak years, perhaps making that switch lower down the table is the wise option.

As for Minamino, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Southampton, so he already understands what life is like under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

It all started off in a bright fashion for the Japan forward, but slowly but surely, his performances and the form of the Saints faded away.
