Manchester City were on the losing side in the curtain-raiser of the English football season as Leicester City claimed the Community Shield.
An 89th-minute penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho secured a 1-0 win for the Foxes as the former City academy player clinched the game for Leicester in the dying moments.
The game was occasionally entertaining. However, the big moment was that Jack Grealish made his official debut for City following his record-breaking move to the club last week.
The £100m-rated superstar came on in the second half for his new team. Yet whilst Grealish was the man of the hour in the Community Shield, he wasn’t the player City fans were raving about post-match.
That honour will have to go to Zack Steffen. Ederson Moraes is still not available following his inclusion in this summer’s Copa America final. Meaning the USA number one took to the field this weekend in the Community Shield.
And the 2018 signing from the Columbus Crew put on one impressive performance. Steffen’s incredible improvised save from Jamie Vardy in the opening half a notable highlight for the American.
Indeed, the 26-year-old shot-stopper has been impressive in pre-season. Moreover, fans on social media, supporters were delighted with Steffen’s performance in the Community Shield.
Whilst Ederson will likely return for the opening game of the season next week, fans are seemingly content with Steffen retaining the spot if the Brazilian keeper is still out.
Here’s what some City fans had to say about Steffen’s display in the Community Shield on Twitter…
