MATTEL and Warner Bros. officially announced in 2019 that popular children’s doll Barbie will be getting her own live-action movie.
Following the announcement, it was determined that actress Margot Robbie will play the lead role as well co-produce alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara.
When is Margot Robbie playing Barbie?
While the film was announced in 2019, fans still have to wait a little longer before their favorite doll makes her way to the big screen.
It was reported by Variety that production for Barbie is scheduled to begin in early 2022 at the Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios in London before being released in theatre’s in 2023.
Prior to Robbie landing the role, it was reported that actresses Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were also in consideration for the part.
What did Margot Robbie say about the role?
Robbie, who is most famously known for her role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, has stated before that she takes her career very seriously when it comes to choosing the roles she plays and has a specific view of who she wants to be as an actress.
“When I was trying to make my name as an actress, creative roles for women were limited,” she revealed to Harper’s BAZAAR back in December 2018. “I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend—just a catalyst for the male story line. It was uninspiring.”
While Barbie is quite a roll change for Robbie, she has stated that she feels honored to play the part.
In a press release, Robbie was seen praising the character for promoting “confidence, curiosity and communication,” along with empowering kids “to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president.”
“I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide,” Robbie said.
While Robbie waits for production to start on Barbie, she will be working on two upcoming films scheduled for a 2022 release.
According to IMDB, Robbie is currently filming Babylon and an untitled Wes Anderson film.
It was also announced that Robbie will be reprising her role as Harley Quinn in the upcoming film Gotham City Sirens and will also star in the film Ruin.
Who else is in the cast of the live-action Barbie?
So far, Robbie has been the only actress announced in the film.
Robbie opened up to British Vogue about what viewers can expect from the upcoming film, saying it won’t be your typical toy-to-television story.
“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…,” Robbie said.
Greta Gerwig is most famously known for writing and directing films like Lady Bird, Little Women, and Mistress America.
