Eidur Gudjohnsen once lost £400,000 in just five months due to gambling addiction

Former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen once lost £400,000 in the space of five months after becoming addicting to gambling.

Gudjohnsen spent six years at Stamford Bridge, scoring 54 goals in 186 Premier League appearances and helping the Blues capture two league titles.

During his time in west London, the Icelandic striker came clean about a gambling addiction he picked up while on a reported £20,000-a-week wage.

He admitted to once betting up to £2,000 on a single spin of the roulette wheel and trying his hand at blackjack, which eventually saw him lose a staggering £400,000 in just five months.

Gudjohnsen revealed in January 2003 that the addiction began when he was sidelined by injury, leaving him lonely in England while his partner and two children were at home in Iceland.

After winning £100,000 in one gambling session, he quickly became hooked and went on to suffer a series of damaging losses.

“When I had that huge win I had a feeling of elation, which I can only compare to the rush of scoring a goal,” Gudjohnsen said.

“But it was a false feeling. I was looking for a quick fix, but it just made things worse. It got to the point where I was getting dragged deeper and deeper.
