Entertainment Icon Quincy Jones’ Divorce from Peggy Lipton Came as Surprise at the Time

Entertainment guru Quincy Jones was married more than once. However, his marriage to Peggy Lipton seemed so perfect that when the couple publicly declared their divorce, it came as a huge shock for everyone. Here is an insight into this fairytale union.

To say that Quincy Jones is an entertainment icon would be an understatement. The man has accomplished a lot, cutting across nearly every facet of the industry.

He not only renders epic and melodious tunes, but he also creates and is great at spotting and rebranding talents. This multifaceted star has been in the business for several decades.

Jones produces TV content, including shows and films; he is also a songwriter, record producer, composer, and is competent with multiple musical instruments.

At 88, he can still school a lot of newbies, having worked with the greatest icons of all times, including Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra.

This journey to incontestable stardom began as a teenager when he got acquainted with musical instruments and built a relationship with some music literates.

Jones’s passion, combined with the life lessons from his dad, which he held dear, gave him a more structured career that has spanned for several decades.

He has learned the art of discipline and putting in extra effort when completing a task or project. Ultimately, his resilience, attitude to work, confidence, and music skills earned him the number one spot in the music and film industry.

He was also loved by fans and some music legends. He also has some notable awards and about 80 Grammy nominations to show for his talent.

It is an undeniable fact that fame as huge as Jones’s would attract a large fanbase, and as a man, mostly female friends. Quincy Jones was romantically involved with a few women. In the end, he married three of them but had seven kids with five different women.

The first time he walked down the aisle was in 1957, when he married Jeri Caldwell, the woman who first made him a father. The couple had a daughter named Jolie.

Barely ten years later, the duo annulled the marriage, and Jones dated Carol Reynolds for a short time; they welcomed his second daughter, Rachel.

His second wife was the Swedish entertainer Ulla Andersson. They welcomed two kids, Martina, their daughter, and Quincy, their son who walked in daddy’s shoes by pursuing a career as a music producer.

The pair were together from 1967 to 1974 before things began to fall apart. However, less than 48 hours after his second divorce, Jones whisked away another lover, this time an actress, to be his bride number three.

Wife number three’s name was Peggy Lipton and she was Jone’s longest marriage. The couple were married for 14 years and had two daughters, Kidada and Rashida, who took after their mother’s profession.

When his marriage to Lipton hit the rocks, he found another woman, a German actress named Nastassja Kinski. They stuck together for five years and had a daughter, Kenya.

Peggy Lipton was born into an upper-middle-class family of Russian-Jewish descent. During her teenage years, she worked as a model but soon began to look at the entertainment industry.

At the age of 19, she had established a small career in both music and acting. However, it was not until 1968, when she starred in “Mod Squad,” that her career experienced tremendous success.

She bagged several nominations and earned some awards too. Lipton is famous for appearing in “I Spy,” “Mannix,” “Mission Impossible,” and “Twin Peaks.”

Lipton met Jones in 1969 on a friend’s boat during a getaway trip to the Bahamas. Two years later, both talents began a romantic relationship, and within a short time, the actress moved into the icon’s home.

This was after she had mastered some culinary skills, as Jones complained that he doesn’t believe in a woman who could not find her way around the kitchen.

Apart from learning to cook to satisfy her husband, Lipton dedicated some of her time to her home and family making sure she was there for her kids and husband.

Although she reprised her role as Julie Barnes in “The Return of Mod Squad” in 1979, she stayed out of the spotlight after that, pressing the brakes on her career and prioritized her family.

Everything seemed to be in place, and many would have thought that Jones would indeed spend forever with Lipton. Their interracial marriage was a success and its longevity might have inspired a few people.

However, by 1989, the duo shocked the world after a spokesperson confirmed the news of their divorce. No further details were given on the matter, except that both parties reached a dissolution in an amicable manner.

Before the divorce, the couple lived apart for a few years. It was later discovered that it was Lipton who slammed her husband with the divorce papers, citing irreconcilable differences.

The court documents also requested for unmentioned spousal/child support and joint custody of their daughters, who had been in Lipton’s custody following their separation.

At the same time, the mother of two ventured back into Hollywood after their split and she bagged significant roles in numerous TV hits.

Despite the love of nearly two decades going sour, it seemed the former couple was mature about their split and there was no back and forth in court any prolonged lawsuit between them.

On the plus side, it appeared that they did a great job at co-parenting their children. In 2014, they had the chance to show the world how cordial they are as they focus on their kids.

Lipton and Jones worked as an onscreen couple to support their daughter Rashida in a scripted single-cam series titled “Tribeca.” The younger Jones was a veteran law enforcement official, and her real-life parents acted as her on-screen parents.

The “Tribeca” series premiered five years before the death of the veteran actress Peggy Lipton. The “The Return of Mod Squad” alum passed away in 2019, at age 72, after battling colon cancer.

It was a tragic moment for her family, including her kids and ex-husband. The girls explained that their mother had a peaceful journey transcending, and they were grateful for spending time with her.

The remarkable music producer drafted a heart-melting tribute for the deceased. Jones referred to his ex-wife as his beloved and mentioned that he was gripped with sadness while recounting that they created many invaluable memories.
